I am a painter and print maker who draws from nature. Here in the south central Louisiana gulf coast area, we experience semi-tropical jungle flood plain, marshes, and coastal wetlands. This environment produces among the world's richest communities of wildlife and botanical diversity. The variety of form, light, color, and the weight of the atmosphere produce a unique experience on which my work is based. I work in pastel directly from sites chosen for the intensity of light, color, and form. Some of these drawings are used as a source, along with memory, to produce studio oils. Other paintings are based on a composite experience of the landscape absorbed over periods of time. My prints are usually woodcuts on cloth or paper that incorporate indigenous life forms and weights, balances, and rhythms of our ecology. For me, life is of a single source, infinitely diverse, constantly changing, and ever the same. What I see in nature, man included, and the process of crafting visual statements from it, make up my art. |
